struck and killed by a sports utility
vehicle as he sat on his bicycle on the
side of the road waiting for his
friends to catch up during the Mount
Dora Bicycle Festival last Sunday.
Howland was riding in the 3-day
event in Mount Dora, just north of
Orlando, having just begun a 25-mile
road tour around 8 am, when he stopped
to apply sunscreen to his face and wait
for his friends to catch up. A 35-year-
old man made a wide turn onto the
road, crossed onto the shoulder and
struck him. The investigation is
continuing in the accident.
According to Howland's fellow
bicycle club members, it wasn't unusual
for him to be out in front of his friends
