At right, construction is under way on the first of 2,500 single-family residences that, along with 4,000 multi -family units, will house more than 15,000 residents. Golfers around the country envy south Florida's perfect year 'round weather, while south Floridians envy the links of Palm Beach County. Golf Digest recently published their list of the 100 greatest courses in America. Florida led the list with 11, and of these, four are in Palm Beach County, while a fifth is just across the line in Martin County. Seminole, in northern Palm Beach County, is the stellar example of the area's premier courses, ranking high among Golf magazine's "50 Greatest Golf Courses in the World." Joining Seminole on Golf Digest's tabulation of the top courses in America are Pine Tree in Delray Beach, J DM ( East) in Palm Beach Gardens, Mayacoo Lakes in West Palm Beach and Jupiter Hills north of Tequesta (on the Martin County side of the border with Palm Beach County). There are over 300 beautiful golf courses in Florida, and according to PGA headquarters in Lake Park, between 80 and 90 of them are in Palm Beach County. From Boca Raton to Delray Beach, from Palm Beach to West Palm and north, the list of outstanding club names familiar to golfers across the coun- try is astounding: Boca West, Boca Lago, Delray Dunes, Quail Ridge, Wellington, Breakers, Royal Palm Beach. A grand tour begins in the northern reaches of the county. We arrive in an area that in recent years has been virtually blossoming with excellent challenges to both the big hitters and the finesse players. Seminole long ago put North Palm Beach on the map, but Frenchman's Creek, East Pointe, Lost Tree Club, Jonathan's Landing and the North Palm Beach Country Club are now equally established in the ranks of the game's elite playgrounds. Perhaps the single feature of each of these courses that binds them together is the one out- standing challenge—that special hole where the golfer must force himself to cease marveling at its beauty long enough to concentrate on the shot selection required to pick up the gauntlet and walk away as the victor rather than the vanquished. At Seminole, "The Hole" is the 388 -yard, par 4 sixth. Weaving in and around two elongated strings of bunkers that block the golfer's view of the green, the sixth hole presents a vista of sand and trouble that can result in double and triple bogies on a windy day. Tommy Ar- mour called the hole, "the finest single golf hole in the United States," and Ben Hogan judged it, "the best par 4 in the world." Frenchman's Creek near Juno has a total of 36 holes, but on the North course's fifth hole the foliage is the foil. A 390 -yard par 4, the fairway is generously wide. If your tee shot goes to the right, though, you're completely screened from the green by a tree that covers half of it. If your second shot is a bit short, go right to your bag for a new ball; there's a pond directly in front of the promised land. Just a few miles to the east of Frenchman's Creek lies the jewel of the North Palm Beach area par 3's. Number 16 at East Pointe is 200 yards long with out of bounds on the left of the fairway and water on the right from tee to green. The green is bunkered to the left and the rear, and if your tee shot puts you in the sand, the only thing you see when you look up is water. The green is double -tiered, but don't please turn to next page 13 Number 12 at the West Palm Beach Country Club has treacherous rough on the left and measures 430 yards from the tee, around the dogleg to the green. At the 375 -yard mark, you have the feeling of hitting into a funnel. worry—if you fly it, there's more water in the back. Adjacent to the Intracoastal Waterway off Indiantown Road in Jupiter, Jonathan's Landing saves the suspense until the very end. The 18th hole is a 456 -yard par 4 with huge bunkers on the right side of the fairway and water directly in front of both the tee and the green. If you like to shoot par, play this course in the summer. During the winter, the wind blows right in your face, and it's impossible to hit the green in two. Singer Island's Lost Tree Club features number 16. A 444 -yard par 4, the distance is the trick. The fairway is a sweeping dogleg to the left with traps all the way down on both the left and the right. The key to conquering this hole is a long tee -shot with accurate placement. Your second shot is to a green that slopes down at an angle from the northwest to the southeast. The water on this hole is only cosmetic, but the pin placement can give you fits. Beauty is the byword at the only golf course within the village of North Palm Beach. Golf pro Peter Finlayson calls the 400 -yard second hole at the North Palm Beach Country Club, "The prettiest in the nation." A par 4, the hole is landscaped on high terrain with a spectacular view of the Intracoastal Waterway. As you look out from the tee, the left side of the fairway is ST UN CEMENT C4)L)1F)0 PORT OF PALM BEACH P. O. There are no prevailing winds to bother you, but if you fade your drive badly, you're in the Intracoastal. Sneaking across the county line, Jupiter Hills includes a fascinating challenge at number 16. Designed by George and Tom Fazio, the hole was originally conceived as a straight- away par 4. George, however, dis- covered an alternate green site on top of a dune and rather than abandon the original concept for the shorter, more intriguing design, he decided to leave both greens. After his drive, the golfer is pre- sented with a choice between a long, straight iron shot to one green, or a shorter pitch up through the trees to another. A short drive up U.S. 1 to Stuart, takes our search for the great challenge on the links to Sailfish Point, where Jack Nicklaus designed a private course scheduled to open later this year. The "window on the sea," the 18th green, is a fitting climax to a beautiful course. Elevated to a height of 12 feet above sea level, it will afford a magnificent view of the ocean. Heading south back into Palm Beach County, it is nearly impossi- ble to thin out the list. Certainly In- dian Trail, President, Breakers West, Indian Spring, Boca Del Mar and the Boca Raton Hotel and Club all offer excellent rounds of golf that require power, finesse and tours of the links in stunning environments. Four clubs, though, Pine Tree, Mayacoo Lakes, J DM East and the West Palm Beach Country Club, in- clude something special. The 16th at Pine Tree looks very tough at 666 yards from the pro tees, but Sam Snead played a round there recently, and "Slammin' Sammy's" choice was number seven. A 465 -yard par 4, the 7th is a dogleg to the right with a pond about 100 yards off the tee. There is also water along the entire right side of the hole. There's no way to play over, through or around it, so you have to go left, but between the water and the out of bounds to the left there's only a 75-to100-foot wide hitting area. If you manage to place your drive there, you're hitting to a kidney -shaped green protected by five bunkers (four left of the green and one right). The green is sloped east to west, and at please turn to next page FOR ALL YOUR SHIPPING NEEDS. The 18th at Nlayacoo Lakes is a monster! The green on this 455 - yard par 4 is protected by water in front and on the right that begins 70 yards up the fairway. If you should fly the green, you're in a very large bunker. The problems, however, begin long before the putting surface. From the tee, you look out at solid trees on the right and out of bounds and a creek on the left. Most of the year, there's a wind in your face, and a driver and a 3 -wood won't get a big hitter On number 18 at Jonathan's Landing in Jupiter, this is your vista as you tee off with the wind in your face. During the winter, it's impossible to hit the green in two on this 465 -yard par four. there in two. If the wind happens to come up when your second shot is in the air, it just hangs there and comes down with a splash. )DM East, another of Golf Digest's "top 100 courses," has a wind hazard of its own. Bunkers on either side of the green on number five aren't a major problem, but water runs down the left side of the fairway and then crosses in front of the green. At 431 yards, this hole always plays long, but when the wind blows in at you, it is almost un- reachable. Gardner Dickinson once hit two tremendous woods and was congratulating himself on getting a shot at an eagle until somebody told him it was a par 4. The 430 -yard 12th hole at the West Palm Beach Country Club is a slight dogleg to the left with mounds, trees and treacherous rough on the left. This par 4 has more treacherous rough on the right, and at the 375 -yard mark, you have the feeling of hitting into a funnel. There is some latitude into the green itself, but not much. Accuracy is necessary to outhit the contours, mounds and one big, The jewel of the North Palm Beach area's par three's, number 16 at East Pointe is 200 yards long with out of bounds on the left and water on the right from tee to green. strategically placed trap.
