1978-16 Requesting that the State of FL Department of Natural Resources Acquire Peanut IslandRESOLUTION N0. 16-78 A RESOLUTION OF THE VILLAGE COUNCIL OF NORTH PALM BEACH, }'hORIDA, RI:QUESTING THE STATE OF FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RE- SOURC};S T'0 ACQUIRE PEANUT ISLAND, AN ENVIRONMENTALLY ENDANGF,RF,D LAND, AS A STATF, PARK. B}: IT RESOLVED BY THE VILLAGE COUNCIL OF NOR17{ PALM BEACH, FLORIDA: W}[ERI;AS, Peanut Island, located in the Intracostal Waterway at the mouth of the Palm Beach Inlet, is the only island of its kind ax the east coast of Florida; and W}[ERF,AS, a majority of the Island is owned by the Port of Palm Beach; and WHF.RF,AS, in the past the Board of Commissioners of the Port of Palm Beach llistrict have leased the Island to private enterprise for business development; and WHF.RF.AS, the lease to private enterprise was terminated ' prior to the undertaking of any development which would have destroyed the character of Peanut Island; and W}{EREAS, the development of Peanut Island would cause de- terioration of the environmental integrity of Lake Worth and the In- tracostal Waterway; and WHF,REAS, due to the unique character of the Island, it s}iould be classified as an environmentally endangered land and pro- tected from any possible future indiscriminate development; and W}{EREAS, the people of the State of Florida have ratified t}ie Land Conservation Act of 1972; NOW, THF,REFORE, BF, IT RESOLVED BY THE VILLAGE COUNCIL OF NORTU PALM BF;AC}{, FLORIDA: ' Section 1. That the foregoing recitals are hereby ratified. Section 2. That the Department of Natural Resources is hereby requested to declare Peanut Island as environmentally endangered land and to take immediate action to procure Peanut Island as a State Park in the interest of the people of Florida. Section 3. Copies of this Resolution shall be sent to the llepartment of Natural Resources and the Palm Beach County Legislative llelegation, and Chairman of the County Commission. Section 4.
