Selection Policy Revised 9-2014North Palm Beach Library Selection Policy Materials selection supports the mission of the Library. The Library recognizes the diversity of its users and potential users, and makes materials selections accordingly. The collection will represent a variety of formats, print, non - print, and electronic. Materials, purchased or donated, are evaluated on the basis of the following criteria: • Level of demand. • Positive rating in standard reviewing media such as library journals. • Authority and competence of the author and publisher. • Cost justifiability in relation to budget and need. • Importance and value to existing collection. • Relevance to community interests, needs and standards. • Factual accuracy. • Currency. • Literary importance as a document. • Suitability of format: physical quality and durability. • Author is local. • Availability from established library vendors. In addition, the following criteria are especially relevant to the selection of materials for youth and young adults: • Maturity of theme /topic. • Reading level. • Interest level. • Age of characters. • Target audience. Patron Recommendations The Library welcomes suggestions and recommendations. However, the decision to acquire materials will be based on the above criteria and the discretion of the professional staff. Gifts and Tax Deductions Gifts or donations of books or other materials are accepted with the understanding that they may be used or disposed of as the Library determines is appropriate, using the above criteria. Processing costs and the condition of the gift material are also taken into consideration. Gifts that are not added to the collection will be given to the Friends of the North Palm Beach Public Library for sale. Under existing law, gifts to libraries may be deductible; the deductibility is governed by the provisions of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 as amended. Library staff shall not provide appraisals or establish value. Valuation of the gift is the responsibility of the donor. The Library will only provide a letter listing the number of items donated. 9/23/2014
