Although it still looks like a natural, unspoiled little island, through its history, Peanut Island has grown - ._ both in size and in importance. In 1915 it sold for $1.; by 1968 Peanut Island Properties was willing to lease the island for some $200,000. per year. Different people have had different versions of what Peanut Island could or should become. Some have seen it as a commercial park and research center for oceanography. One company wanted to use it as a shipping terminal. The Coast Guard does use it for one of their sta- tions. The Navy saw it as an ideal place to protect President Kennedy and his family in the event of a nuclear attack. I be ronically, the island is not so natural after all. It is actual- ly composed of the dredged up bottom land of Lake Worth. It began to take shape back in 1915, as the bottom of Lake Worth was dredged near the in- let. At that time, the state own- ed the spoil island, which measured only 10 acres and was then called Inlet Island. For the grand price of $1., trustees of the Internal Im- provement Fund deeded the island to the old Lake Worth Inlet District. As dredging continued, Inlet Island grew. By 1923 it was 47 acres and valued at $4700. As its size and value increased, the island acquired several names, including Spoil Island, Parker Point, and Parker Island. Continued dredging caused the island to grow until reaching its present size of 66 acres. Although the island is shaped somewhat like a peanut (especially when viewed from the air), that was not the source of its present name. Had that lease and the development project been con- summated, some 23 million dollars would have been paid to the Port of Palm Beach District, and Peanut Island would certainly have under- gone some radical changes. Interestingly enough, some ten years before that con- troversy erupted over non- public uses of Peanut Island, the U.S. Government had very quietly, even stealthily, employed a very small portion of the island for its own uses.
