By John Le Carre. Publisher: Co- ward - McCann. Available at the North Palm Beach Library. THE SPY WHO CAME IN FROM THE COL.Dreminds us that a gripping, realistic account of mystery and in- trigue can be possible with- out the James Bond format of raw sex, violent brutal- ity, and sensuous food de- scriptions. John Le Carre Ms spun a delicate web of plot, counter plot, and counter counter plot that leads the reader through the intricate maze of mo- dern espionage. After experiencing re- peated failures with his East German nemesis, Alex Leamus, the British master spy finds his ef- fectiveness questioned. The decision for him to "come in from the cold,. (retire) is delayed by one final assignment to expose his Communist counterpart to the East Germans as a double agent and thereby remove him from compet- ition. Leamus' complete demoralization and ruin are then tragically detailed until he apparently betrays the entire British espion- age system t0 • the Com- munists for revenge and oney. With a masterful atten- tion to details, Leamus' well planned moves ahead inexorably toward success when the Communisttwists the facts to his own advan- tage and Leamus is foiled again. The true climax, however, occurs later as Leamus a- wakens to the bizarre meaning of the result in which he, as the pawn, has been brilliantly manipu- lated to win the chess match for the British. And what's a city without a public library? In 1962, the Village of North Palm Beach had to face up to that second question. Then, as now, the village was a prosperous at. tractive community with modern schools, churches, swimming pools, a country club, a golf course and block after block of well -kept homes, It was a town that had everything — except a public library. Today through the efforts and determination of the North Palm Beach Library Society, this is no longer true. Ilow did it all start? In 1962 the North Pa]m Beach branch of the American Association of University,. Women (AA! W) conducted a "feasibility study" to deter- mine if a need for a Iibrary existed. The results indicated that the need was real. A library study committee, which shortly thereafter became the present Library Society, was formed, Mrs. Ralph Huts was president and Dr. Donald Bicknell, vice president, Throughout those first months ubile they were getting started, Library Society members spent in- numerable hours preparing the facilities for use as a library, They processed books, built shelves, RIGHT: Acting librarian Mrs. Paul Edmond cheeks out a book .+.a Mrs. J.
