Is there anything you
can't find in a library
Not according to local librarians, You want to start a business? Find a
bong lost mend? Need eta use a computer? Taking a trip and want some
books on tape? Need a quick answer and can't lease your desk?
The answers are as close as your nearest library.
Next week we'll begin u series of columns by Martin J. Kirschner on
libraries in the northern Palm Beaches. We hope they will introduce you
to your local library and the world of resources it has to offer.

It all stems so simple, You browse
the books lining rows of shelves, pick a
few that suit your fancy, check there out
and you're on your merry way.
A visit with the librarians at the
North Palm Beach library shows that it
seems so simple because the librarians
. and systems that make it work strive for
that.
North Palm Beach Library boasts
five librarians with a combined total of
50 yeas aF experience, Half of those
years are attributed to the Library
Director, Nancy. Moore, who celebrates
an aunivcrsary of 28 years with the
library on December 1.
Nancy has assembled a diverse mai
proud group of women that serve as
"departmental" librarians,
Karrm White, the ReFertrice
Librarian, says, "My job is Iikc playing
leopirdy every day," whet" speaking
about the varied questions the
deparlmertt fields from patrons and
callers, We average about 35
telephone irrgtairies a day, that's six days
a week,
Betsy Taylor, the Ciraularion
Supervisor, is the one who keeps those
books moving, She operates with three
part time staff. and five volunteers and
they move plenty of books. 'Many
people are taking out a- many as ten
books a week," Taylor says. "Equally
popular, she continues, "is our audio -
beak collection, It is one of the largest
in the county with everything from best
sellers,biograhies, travel, self-help and
instructional"
The. Children's Librarian. Sheila
Wilkie. is a transplant from the Cotmty
library system. She appreciates the
North Palm Beach Library because of
the "more speoialifed attention the
structure here allows us to give to
patrons," Willie says, Operating with
two full time staff and two volunteers,
the Children's Library has varied story

special programs throughout the year
and a Birthday Book Club,
The Birthday Book Club is an
opporumity for parents, grandparents or
whoever, to donate a book in honor of
someone's birthday- A special book
plate lianas the Birthday girl or boy
and notes the dames name, Wilkie
says, It a great way to add to our
collection, and for parents and
grandparents to encourage their
children's interest end love for books
and reading-"
And. lastly, the Technical Services
Librarian, Vickie Toslin. Vickie,
working full time but with the. help of
village education reimbursement
programs, just received her masters
degree in library science. She's now
applying much of that experience into
the automation of the library which is
set for 1996. The village council has
approved $91,000 to thatend,
Tcchnir al Services also means taking
Daze of the books, processing all
materials, cataloguing and, now,
computerization, Of course. the
Librtuy already has Selflin--the ou•line
access service --available and on the
fourth Wednesday of every month,
provides a special training for
beginning Sclflin users. Technical
Services seems to have it's finger in
everything ai the Library -
"And," according to Nancy Moore,
„that's how we operate —as a team. You
know," she. adds, "it's fitting that our
staff be women since it was a
remarkable group of women that started
this library over 30 years ago-'
Lastly, Nancy wants to salute the
Library's Friends of the Library group
which is so important to the facility's
growth and improvements, According
to Moore, in March the group gave
S6,000 to the Library. "It's 150 paid
members area boon to our operations,"
says Moore.
