"Thoughts About Babe-O"
If somebody ever invents a way to talk to babies,
I know the babies would be the most against it. Their
best weapon is the fact that since you don't always know
what they want, you will offer everything. When our
own 6-month-old babe-o goes into a tirade he always
gets what he really wants, and if he didn't really want
it, he cries himself to sleep. Many of us grown-ups never
know what we really want. We waste our whole lives
searching for the wrong thing while the babe-o would
just cry himself to sleep.
It's safe to say that every young parent worries
about spoiling a baby. Dr. Spock tells us not to answer
to his every whim. So when bake-o cries I ignore him
but my wife thinks I am heartless. She says there is al-
ways a reason that he cries. On my wife's suggestion,
I take bake-o for a walk. But I know it is the babe-o who is
taking me for a ride.
When the babe-o learns how to talk, he knows he'll
be done for, because he'll have to come up with reasons
for his demands. I will then treat him as an equal, and
it will work out very nicely. I only hope he treats me
as an equal; because, you see, the babe-o is nobody's
fool. According to Darwin's principles of natural selec-
tion, he is a combination of the best qualities of his par-
ents. He is an improved version of us. A late model.
In fact, maybe he's even a genius. or is my parental pride
sticking out?
BY MICHAEL GIERSHER
The main thing I'm looking forward to when he
learns to talk is the honesty which children are universal-
ly known to express. The honesty which is so lacking in
grown-ups is always a child's finest quality. Most of us
lose it as we grow and harden. My fondest ambition for
him is that he retain that honesty.

A New Score
The musicians of the New
York Philharmonic signed a
three-year contract last week
that makes them the highest
paid orchestra musicians in
the United States. At the
same time, they cancelled
their weekly radio program,
which has been nationally
broadcast for 22 years.
The new contract raises the
basic minimum pay for the
106 member group to $250
a week this season and next
and $270 a week in the third
season, and guarantees the
musicians $1,000 each in re-
cording fees each year.
The orchestra's weekly
broadcasts were cancelled
because the musicians decid-
ed they would no longer per-
form there without receiving
union -scale wages, which
would raise the cost of each
program to between $3,500
and $4,000.
Gun -Toting
Tellers Now
Work in Bank
Gun -toting tellers have
gone to work in branch of-
fices of the Bank of Amer-
ica in the San Francisco area.
They are policemen who
work in the banks during off -
duty hours.
The banks hired the armed
tellers because they have been
the frequent targets of ban-
dits. The Bank of America
gave them special training for
their work as tellers.
