PROCLAMATION
VILLAGE OF NORTH PALM BEACH
OFFICE OF THE MAYOR
YEAR OF THE EVERGLADES
WHEREAS, while eazly Florida residents may have considered the Everglades a
worthless swamp and had legitimate reasons for draining the Everglades, they had little idea of
the environmental harm they were doing; and
WHEREAS, the degradation of the Everglades has resulted in the extinction or near
extinction of numerous species, including the Florida Panther; and
WHEREAS, the Everglades is now recognized as a unique and extraordinarily important
piece of Florida's ecological puzzle, one that must be protected at all costs; and
WHEREAS, the Everglades acts as a back-up water supply for about three million South
Floridians since water from the Everglades National Park drains into the Biscayne Aquifer; and
WHEREAS, the Everglades and related natural areas draw visitors from around the world
who aze fascinated by its remazkable complexity, diversity and uniqueness; and
WHEREAS, the Arthur R. Mazshall Foundation is inviting The Village of North Palm
Beach to proclaim that 2010 be the Yeaz of the Everglades, and invite all citizens to participate in
Community Outreach Programs that encourage everyone to become lifelong stewazds of the
Everglades.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, David B. Norris, by virtue of the authority vested in me as Mayor
ofthe Village ofNorth Palm Beach, do hereby proclaim 2010 as the
YEAR OF THE EVERGLADES
in the Village of North Palm Beach, Florida.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal of the Village
