NORTH PALM BEACH —
One of the busiest corners in
this village is the former
dining room of the old coun-
try club.
Food is no longer pur-
veyed, but village residents
of all ages visit it often
searching for and finding
entertainment and knowl-
edge in the room which in
Ausust 1964 was transformed
into the village library.
The move to establish a
public library was initiated in
November 1962 by the Amer-
ican Association of Universi-
ty Women's library commit-
tee. Money was raised;;., to
purchase reference books';and
other books were collected
throughout the village.
In July 1963 the libr y
was opened in the wom s
locker room of the old coun-
try club. By the end of the
year, 332 family membership
cards had been issuefnd 1,-
915 of the collection rof 2 800
books borrowed.
Mrs. Ralph Huls was the
first president of the library
society, followed by 'Dr.
Donald Bicknell, Mrs. J. Ed-
win Obert, Mrs. Edward
Sharp and the current presi-
dent, Mrs. Patricia Atwater.
For the first six months,
the library was completely
staffed by the society and its
volunteer workers. In Janu-
ary 1964, the Village Council
voted to hire a librarian, and
in August the library society
refurnished the dining room
and moved the library into
its present quarters.
