AAUW Plans Eighth Anniversary
Having been founded Feb-
ruary 19, 1959 the North Palm
Beach Branch of the Ameri-
can Association of University
Women will soon celebrate its
e i g h t h anniversary. The
founders were members of
the Palm Beach County
Branch of AAUW who resided
in North Palm Beach and in-
clude Mrs. H a r o l d Beery,
Mrs. Thomas Hart, Mrs. J.
Edwin Obert, Mrs. Sharp and
Mrs. Clair A. Thomas.
The Branch received its na-
tional charger on October 29,
1959 with the following char-
ter members: Mrs. William
Abbott, Mrs. William Barnett,
Mrs. Harold Beery, Mrs. Les-
lie Churchill, Mrs. Keith
Cloyed, Mrs. Howard Crab-
tree, Mrs. John Dower, Mrs.
Lewis Emerson, Mrs. Herbert
Gildan, Mrs. Thomas Hart,
Mrs. Albert Keller, Mrs. Eu-
gene Lehmann, Mrs. J. Ed-
win Obert, Mrs. Donald Rob-
in, Mrs. Edmund Rodman,
Mrs. Max Schilling, Mrs. Ed-
ward Sharp, Mrs. William
Sunshine, Mrs. Harold Tiede-
mann and Mrs. Lowell Van

The threefold purposes of
AAUW is: continuation of in-
tellectual growth, advance-
ment of women and the as-
sumption of responsibility for
community progress. This in-
cludes furthering education
with all its ramifications.
At the national level, the
Fellowships program has en-
listed the greatest support
a n d enthusiasm. Approxi-
mately 100 fellowships are
awarded annually, about half
of which are given to foreign
women to study in the United
States. These stipends
amount to about $300,000 per
y e a r. Fellowships are sup-
ported by contributions from
AAUW branches throughout
the United States and from
interest on a three million
d o l l a r AAUW endowment
Locally the North Palm
Beach Branch took the lead-
ership in forming the North
Palm Beach l i b r a r y. The
group did a feasibility study
to determine the need for,
and interest in a local library.
Subsequently the AAUW Li-
brary Committee invited all
community organizations to
help with this project, and
the North Palm Beach Li-
brary Society was formed.
AAUW continues to aid and
su ort the library.

Study groups; open to the
public, are conducted each
year.
The proposed Baptist Col-
lege is supported by AAUW
North Palm Beach AAU
maintains a file of persons
available and qualified to
speak to children of elemen-
tary and high school age on
many educational topics.
At present, members are
giving many hours of time at
Allamanda Elementary
School in Palm Beach Gar-
dens helping teachers with
their outstanding remedial
program.
