This past spring, the library began offering Wi- Fi service. Wi-Fi is short for wireless fidelity. The service is a wireless way for employees or rela- tives to access a network from relatively anywhere. Wi-Fi uses radio signals instead of phone or cable lines to make the connec- tion. North Palm Beach and Lake Park are the only north county libraries with the service. The . Palm Beach County Library in West Palm Beach hopes to offer Wi-Fi in another year. Library director Kathie Olds said the branch got the Wi-Fi service to cut down on the number of people waiting to use the three Internet access com- puters at the library. Scott White, the Village's information systems coor- dinator, said Wi-Fi was simple for the library to get. The library uses a Bell- South digital subscriber line for its three desktop computers, so it just added Wi-Fi on the high -service line. Another difference between using Wi-Fi and using the library's computers is the Wi-Fi service has no time limit. On the library's computers, there's a time limit of 30 min- utes, but can stay on longer if nobody isn't waiting. "We see people come in all the time, open up their laptop and go," Ms. Olds said. While Wi-Fi users do not need library cards, they do need wireless network cards for their laptops. Most of the laptops on the market today come with wireless cards built into them, Mr. White said "People can also use Wi-Fi if they have PDAs (personal digi- tal assistants) as long as (the PDAs) have wireless cards built in," he said. Multiple users can access the service at the same time, Mr. White said. "It can fit up to 254 people on the system, not like that's going to happen," he said.
