Old Port Cove, a
60-acre water -oriented
condominium com-
munity here, is observ-
ing its twelfth year since
initial construction be-
gan on the site which
has a history dating
back more than 200
years.
In the 1700's and
earlier Indians used to
fish in the waters of
Lake Worth and hunt
along the quarter -mile
shoreline which now
marks the eastern peri-
meter of the Old Port
Cove community.
Archaeologists say
the area has been in-
habited for almost 2,500
years.
In the 1890's Old Port
Cove acreage marked
the terminus of the
historic Celestial Rail-
road, a narrow gauge
train operation which

major stops - Jupiter
and Juno.
Steamships - naviga-
ting down the Indian
River used to dock at
Jupiter where the Cele-
stial Railroad engineer
would greet its pas-
sengers with a blow of
his whistle.
On the train ride
south, a leisurely trip,
the engineer would
sometimes stop for pas-
sengers to bag a deer or
wild turkey.
The fare was 10 cents
per mile, 75 cents for the
full. 72-mile journey. At
the end of the line, now
the site of Old Port
Cove, the passengers
completed their trip to
Palm Beach once again
by boat.
The land along the
sheltered cove remained
in • a pristine state
throughout the first half
of this century. It wasn't
until the 1950's that
developers came to the
area and first saw the
site that was to become
Old Port Cove.
Watching the increas-
ing need for additional
yachting facilities
throughout the 1960's,
they purchased the N-
acre tract in 1969. It
occupies the northeast
corner of Lake Worth,
bordered by the Intra-
coastal Waterway to the
South and U.S. Highway
•#1 to the west.
Knowledgeable in the
yachting industry, Old
Port Cove's developers
were aware that local
governments could not

rapidly 'growing demand
for marinas and boat
slips. They also believed
