HomeMy WebLinkAbout1983-04-09 Old Port Cove Seeped in History (North County News)Old Port Cove Seeped in Histo Old Port Cove, a 60-acre water -oriented condominium com- munity here, is observ- ing its twelfth year since initial construction be- gan on the site which has a history dating back more than 200 years. In the 1700's and earlier Indians used to fish in the waters of Lake Worth and hunt along the quarter -mile shoreline which now marks the eastern peri- meter of the Old Port Cove community. Archaeologists say the area has been in- habited for almost 2,500 years. In the 1890's Old Port Cove acreage marked the terminus of the historic Celestial Rail- road, a narrow gauge train operation which gotits ts na me from two major stops - Jupiter and Juno. Steamships - naviga- ting down the Indian River used to dock at Jupiter where the Cele- stial Railroad engineer would greet its pas- sengers with a blow of his whistle. On the train ride south, a leisurely trip, the engineer would sometimes stop for pas- sengers to bag a deer or wild turkey. The fare was 10 cents per mile, 75 cents for the full. 72-mile journey. At the end of the line, now the site of Old Port Cove, the passengers completed their trip to Palm Beach once again by boat. The land along the sheltered cove remained in • a pristine state throughout the first half of this century. It wasn't until the 1950's that developers came to the area and first saw the site that was to become Old Port Cove. Watching the increas- ing need for additional yachting facilities throughout the 1960's, they purchased the N- acre tract in 1969. It occupies the northeast corner of Lake Worth, bordered by the Intra- coastal Waterway to the South and U.S. Highway •#1 to the west. Knowledgeable in the yachting industry, Old Port Cove's developers were aware that local governments could not - keep pace with the rapidly 'growing demand for marinas and boat slips. They also believed that many persons moving - to- the Palm Beaches simply wanted Quay North, one of the earliest residences to be built at Old Port Cove_ in NPB, overlooks Lake Worth and the Atlantic Ocean. They began the first phase of Old Port Cove in 1971 with the con- struction of Admiralty, two 12-story towers con- taining a total of 187 apartment residences, 14 garden apartments and a large swimming pool. and lounge. Added later were the buildings of Quay North and Quay South, Marina Tower, Cove E., Cove W., Har- bor village and Lake Point Towers. Each residence at Old Port Cove offers private recreational facilities in- cluding a swimming pool, in addition to the larger community's three marinas, yacht club, tennis club and shopping plaza. Old Port Cove's three marinas can accommo- date up to 300 yachts. OLD PORT COVE Started in 1969, this condominium complex has proved to be one of the finest and most successful in Florida.
