Quay North, one of the earliest residences to be built at Old Port Cove in North Palm
Beach, overlooks Lake Worth and the Atlantic Ocean. The 60-acre water -oriented
luxury condominium community, which offers three marinas, a yacht club, tennis
club and shopping plaza, is currently observing its twelfth anniversary following its
recent final completion.
Old Port Cove, a 60-acre wa-
ter -oriented condominium
community here, is observ-
ing its twelfth year since ini-
tial construction began on the
site which has a history dat-
ing back more than 200 years.
In the 1700's and earlier In-
dians used to fish in the wa-
ters of Lake Worth and hunt
along the quarter -mile shore-
line which now marks the
eastern perimeter of the Old
Port Cove community.
Archaeologists say the area
has been inhabited for almost
2,500 years.
In the 1890's Old Port Cove
acreage marked the termi-
nus of the historic Celestial
Railroad, a narrow gauge
train operation which got its
name from two major stops —
0 Jupiter and Juno.
Steamships navigating
down the Indian River used to
dock at Jupiter where the Ce-
lestial Railroad engineer
would greet its passengers
with a blow of his whistle.
On the train ride south, a
leisurely trip, the engineer
would sometimes stop for
passengers to bag a deer or
wild turkey.
The fare was 10 cents per
mile, 75 cents for the full 71-
mile journey. At the end of
the line, now the site of Old
Port Cove, the passengers
completed their trip to Palm
+ Beach once again by boat.
The land along the shel-
tered cove remained in a
pristine state throughout the
first half of this century. It
wasn't until the 1950's that de-
velopers came to the area
and first saw the site that was
to become Old Port Cove.
Watching the increasing
need for additional yachting
facilities throughout the
1960's, they purchased the 60-
acre tract in 1969. It occupies
the northeast corner of Lake
Worth, bordered by the Intra-
coastal Waterway to the south
and U.S. Highway #1 to the
west.
Knowledgeable in the
yachting industry, Old Port
Cove's developers were
aware that local governments
could not keep pace with the
rapidly growing demand for
marinas and boat slips. They
also'believed that many per-
sons moving to the Palm
Beaches simply wanted to
live at the water's edge.
They began the first phase
of Old Port Cove in 1971 with
the construction of Admiral-
ty, two 12-story towers con-
taining a total of 187 apart-
ment residences, 14 garden
apartments and aIarge swim-
ming pool and lounge.
Building of Quay North and
Quay South, two 12-story
towers overlooking Lake
Worth and the Atlantic
Ocean, began in 1972. They
are connected by a common
pool and recreation area.
Marina Tower, a 20-floor 77-
unit structure, was built in
1974. It overlooks the large
of three marinas at Old Port
Cove and the Old Port Yacht
Club.
Two more twin towers,
Cove East and Cove West,
were completed in 1979. With
just four apartments per floor
and wraparound balconies,
the 22-story condominium
complex provides magnifi-
cent waterfront views.
Soon afterward came the
addition of Harbor Village, a
group of 96 luxury low-rise
residences and townhouses
on 17 acres centered around a
private marina - the only pri-
vate marina at Old Port Cove.
Finally, the $52 million
Lake Point Tower, recently
opened, marked the comple-
tion of the Old Port Cove com-
munity. The 22-story building
houses 168 apartments at the
north end of the site, all with
waterfront balconies and ter-
races. Four furnished models
are available for inspection.
Each residence at Old Port
Cove offers private recre-
ational facilities including a
swimming pool, in addition to
the larger community's three
marinas, yachf club, tennis
club and shopping plaza.
Old Port Cove's three mari-
nas can accommodate up to
300 yachts.
