County seeks $212,000 for Big Munyon projeel By JOE BROGAN r a rt Real) F Post Staff Writer PALM BEACH SHORES — Palm Beach. County asked the Florida Inland Navigation Dis- trict fur $212,000 Friday to help pay for the first phase of the environmental restoration of Big Mi.rnyon Island in the Intracoast- al Waterway. The 45-acre island in North Palm Beach, part of John D. MacArthur Beach State Park, has beenseverely eroded on the !: est side by waves from passing boat rat ' .c, said Jim Barry, di- rector of coastal and wetlands management for the county De- partment of Environmental Re- sources Management. Plans call for the county to place 1,300 tons of rocks along 300 feet of the island's northwest corner as a wave break, Barry said. Exotic vegetation, such as Australian pines. also would be removed from a 3.7-acre section, Please see Bid UNYON/3B unty s s grant for islan BIG MUNY Nr'from 1 B Red and black mangroves would be planted, and a clan- nel and several smaller ditch- es would allow the tide to flush the mangrove area. '.et-p project would reduce silt in the water and enhance the fish and wildlife habitat, Barry said. A study last year by. the state Department of Envi- ronmental Regulation showed the island was the top priority site for e.nvironmen- ta.l restoration in the Intra- coastal Waterway from •North Palm Beach to Boyn- ton Beach, Barry said. The county would. pay $40,000 of the cost of the first phase, Barry said. The second phase would be the renovation of another 2,200 feet on the island's Western shore. Within five years, the state would build a board- walk from the mainland to the island for passive park activities, such as fishing, Barry said. The John D. and Cather- ine T. MacArthur Foundation has expressed an interest in financing recreational devel- opment of the island in the later stages of the project. Barry was told by FIND Chairman S.E. Goodman to justify the spending as an environmental education project. Decisions on grants will be made in July on whether to provide money for the county's proposal and six oth- er requests made Friday, tor PROJECT REQJESTS II $97,500 for boat -ramp renovation and con-. struction of 15 boat slips at the Pahokee municipal .marina complex. • $ 0,soo to help establish a Riviera Beach c .city marine patrol to protect manatees within the city's maritime boundaries. , W $95,000 for an environmental education program at the Palm Beach Maritime Museum in Riviera Beach.
