North Palm Beach Country Club's Director of Golf, Lee Stroever, offers tips on how to play two of his course's most unique and challenging holes. FIFTH HOLE The green on this par 3 is angled from front -left to back - right, and the prevailing wind comes off of the water on your right. The entire right side of the green is guarded by a massive bunker. There are also two small pot bunkers off of the left side of the greens edge. The green may also be the most undulating surface on.the course. When the hole location sits in the bowl on the front - right of the green, you may see an ace with the side and back boards funneling the ball toward the hole. There's a large bunker along the right side of the fairway and one small pot bunker in the middle of the landing area. This small pot bunker divides the fairway and leaves you with two choices — either play short and left to a generous part of the fairway but leave yourself with a much longer second shot and very difficult angle, or play over the large bunker on the right to a small landing area but, if successfully executed, leave yourself with a much easier approach to the green. The second shot plays slightly uphill and into the prevail- ing wind. When playing to the green — the smallest on the course — err a little long and right, as the front left of the green is guarded by a deep bunker. COME PLAY WHERE THE P.G.A. "This is very much a links - style course, which is unique to our area. The course is very open from tee to green, but there is a ton of undulation - both natural and man-made - and those elevation changes exist throughout all 18 holes," said Lee Stroever, Director of Golf at North Palm Beach Country Club. "I would say it's more difficult than the average course, but being that it's open and offers six sets of tees, it lends itself to fair and friendly play for golfer's of all skill lev- els." Because the Jack Nick- laus Signature Course is fair- ly open, accuracy off the tees isn't all that crucial, but the true tests lie on and near the greens. The course is laced with deep bunkers, and the greens are severely undulated. "The greens are definite- ly the pride of our course, and something we're well known for," said Stroever. "They are pretty fast and true, and they're a blast to putt on." Stroever is entering his fourth season as the Director of Golf at North Palm Beach Country Club, and he says this is the most excited he's been. "The course is excellent, and it has never been in bet- ter condition," he said. "The layout is fantastic, and a few holes play along the Intra- coastal Waterway, which cer- tainly makes for a special product." If you want to know how great the course is, you don't have to take Stroever's word for it. The club has been ranked the No. 1 public course in Palm Beach County by Palm Beach Post readers, and Golfweek magazine recognized it as the No. 1 municipal course in Flor- ida and the 27th best in the country. Golfweek also called North Palm Beach Country Club on of the top 10 courses in the state, and Rolex twice listed it among the best 1,000 golf courses in the world. "It's encouraging to hear that our golf course is so well regarded throughout the state and country, and we do work hard at that, but we also put great emphasis on our cus- tomer service," said Stroever. "Our goal is to build strong re- lationships with each person who comes to our club. That includes learning everybody's name, recognizing their pref- erences, and doing whatev- er it takes to make them com- fortable from the time they get here, until the time they leave." That approach seems to be working well for the semi -pri- vate club, which has about a 50/50 split between public play and members. "Whether you're a member or not, we want this to feel like your club," said Stroever. The club also formed its own junior golf team as part of the South Florida PGA's Team Golf program. "A number of local clubs participated and we played in tournaments during the summer," said Stroever, who serves as President of the lo- cal PGA chapter's Junior Golf Committee. "It's like Little League for golf." This is just one of the ma- ny ways that Stroever is trying to enhance the overall experi- ence at his club. "Family is very important to us, and we're certainly fo- cused on creating that atmo- sphere here," he said.
