My Dad was part of the choir and each year they presented an hour long patriotic service with songs, readings and personal comments from choir members. I was particularly intrigued by the event since everyone in the choir wore their dress military uniforms or other service uniforms including nurse uniforms, USO uniforms, etc. At one such event my Dad and a few others were asked to tell the congregation the branch of service they were in, their unit, and the battle theatre in which they served. When my Dad said that he was in the 1st Marine Division and served from Guadalcanal to Okinawa, an audible gasp came from the pews. It was at that moment that I recognized that my Dad’s military service was important and meaningful to others. For years as a youngster, I wondered why the congregation would immediately recognize the importance of serving in the 1st Marines. Later in life I discovered that a war correspondent named Richard Tregaskis wrote a best seller entitled “Guadalcanal Diary” and this book along with newsreels of the day recounted the exploits, extreme hardships, and incredible sacrifices of the 1st Marines as they fought in the South Pacific. My Dad mentioned to me a couple years before he died that his unit was supposed to get a “Presidential Unit Citation” recognizing their extraordinary accomplishments. However, the necessary paperwork was lost and he passed away assuming the medal was never awarded. About 15 years ago, I asked the Veterans Admin- istration to send me duplicates of the medals he had received and to my amazement, a “Presidential Unit Citation” was included. There are literally millions of stories of men like Johnny Green whose service, commitment, sacrifice, and bravery are told every year in churches, synagogues, town halls, VFW’s, porches, and dining rooms throughout our country. Now that we have an honored place in the community for our veterans, I encourage all of you to use it, enjoy it, and build upon your own personal memories of loved ones who answered the call to serve. Our Keynote speaker is Chief Financial Officer and Hometown Hero, Jeff Atwater, along with renowned Baritone Lou Galterio performing the national anthem and other patriotic songs. There will be a live TAPS player, and the Village Honor Guard will present the flags and Colors. Come honor all of our veterans on November 11th at 1:00 p.m. Jeff Atwater, a fifth-generation Floridian, was elected Florida's Chief Financial Officer November 2, 2010. Guided by his family's time-honored tradition of serving the community, CFO Atwater was inspired by his parents' values, instilling a hard work ethic, a commitment to family, and a deep sense of appreciation for service to community. His late father, John Stafford Atwater, was a World War II fighter pilot and accomplished FBI agent who later became police chief of the Village of North Palm Beach. His mother was a teacher and continues to serve as a community volunteer. CFO Atwater's commitment to public service first began in 1993 when he served as Vice Mayor of North Palm Beach. In 2000, he began his legislative service as a member of the Florida House of Representatives. Two years later, he ran for and was elected to the Florida Senate where he continued to serve the people of Broward and Palm Beach Counties. After chairing high profile Senate committees, CFO Atwater gained the unanimous support of his fellow Senators in becoming Senate President and led the Senate from 2008 through 2010. In the Legislature, CFO Atwater dedicated his 10 years of service to improving the lives of Floridians by lowering taxes, protecting key investments in early childhood education, raising school performance standards and establishing incentives that attract emerging industries to Florida. CFO Atwater and his wife, Carole, have four children. Parks & Recreation/Village Clerk In Flander’s Fields In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields. - Lt. Col.. John McCrae Lou Galterio is known for his amazing and moving rendition of the Star Spangled Banner. His powerful bari- tone brings him many opportunities to sing for the NBA, NFL, NHL and Major League Baseball. He’s even sung for Monday Night Football at the Superdome and the NBA Playoffs. Lou has also been invited to perform for the First Lady, the Speaker of the House, on Opening Day for the Joint Session of Congress and for the Governors from over a dozen different states. In addition to the National Anthem, Lou entertains his audience in styles ranging from Opera to Broadway and Classical to Pop. He headlines at events throughout the country and has performed for celebrities such as Donald Trump, Regis Philbin, Gloria Estefan, Rod Stewart and world- renowned producer/composer/ songwriter David Foster. Seniors are encouraged to take the time to research all the financial aspects of estate planning. However, they often neglect to realize that responsible estate planning includes making decisions and financial arrangements for their own funeral. At a time when we protect our families from difficult choices through the use of Living Wills, Advance Directives, and Health Care Proxies we forget that our families can be equally traumatized financially and emotionally when trying to cope with final arrangements. The Neptune Society - the largest and oldest Cremation Society in Florida and the nation - has designed a series of educational seminars that allow attendees to explore their options and determine what steps they can take to preserve their dignity, allow their ultimate wishes to be followed, shield their family from unnecessary stress, and protect their estate from a funeral industry that profits from emotional overspending at an exceedingly vul- nerable time for their family. In addition, litera- ture and forms will be available regarding Living Wills and Advance Directives. For more information on this program, please call Alex at 651-255-7164. P A G E 6 Save the Date !
