September 2013
As you know, we are constructing the new Veterans
Memorial Park which will be located next to the
Library. We hope you will attend the Veteran’s Day
Ceremony– watch the next newsletter for more
details.
One of the things we’ve also included for this area
is hookups for a holiday tree and lights. I under-
stand that the area around the Village Hall used to
be the focal point for the tree lighting ceremony and
we want to incorporate that celebration at the new
memorial. We also plan to have a tree both at the
memorial and at the country club to create a festive
atmosphere for both locations.
We plan to have some of the planted trees and the
trellises in the memorial decorated with holiday
lights as well. We want to make this a place both of
honor and enjoyment and we hope that you will
take time to stroll through it, sit and visit with friends
and family, or simply catch a glimpse of the holiday
decorations as you pass by.
Police News
The North Palm Beach Police Depart-
ment would like to inform all residents
that distraction thefts are occurring in
the local area. These crimes are being
committed by male and females in
groups of two or more in which the
thieves pose as landscapers, plumb-
ers, pest control and even city workers
to gain the trust of the targeted victim.
Their mode of operation is typically to
take the victim to their backyard while
the second and/or third person enters
into the residence. Once inside
they search for jewelry, cash,
silver cutlery, and other valua-
bles. These groups typically
target elderly residents.
The key to prevention is to un-
derstand the method of opera-
tion and not to allow yourself to
become distracted by thieves
that attempt to lead you to your
backyard.
If you find yourself in contact
with individuals that match this
description, do not let your
guard down and immediately
contact the police depart-
ment.
North Palm Beach Police
Department urges all resi-
dents to confirm the identity
of any and all workers before
allowing them onto your
property or into your resi-
dence.

“The Best Place to Live Under the Sun”
Save the date!
November 11th!
Time is running out! If you wish to have your brick or memorial plaque ready in time for Veteran’s
Day, at the Village’s Veteran’s Day Ceremony, place your order by September 13th! The new Vet-
erans Memorial Park that will be located just north of the Library will be unveiled on November
11th, Veteran’s Day. It will provide an opportunity for the community to recognize the service and
sacrifice of our veterans, but it will also be an opportunity for families and friends of deceased and
living veterans to recognize them for their individual contributions in defense of our country.
We have a number of ways that you and your family can recognize someone special to you, by
creating a lasting monument to their service as a part of the memorial. We have selected an array
of options that are priced from $100 for an engraved brick to contributions for items such as
benches, a trellis, one of the many trees in the memorial, and other options as well.
For donations other than those for the brick paver a plaque will be in front of the donated item
which will include the name of the honored veteran, his or her branch of service & other pertinent
information regarding their service to our country. Below is a listing of those items that you may
consider as a remembrance for a loved one who has served his or her country while in uniform.
Please submit to the Village Manager’s Office.

CONSTITUTION DAY AND CITIZENSHIP DAY and CONSTITUTION
WEEK: September 17, 2013 marks the 226th anniversary of the drafting of
the Constitution of the United States of America by the Constitutional Con-
vention. In remembrance of the signing of the Constitution and in recognition
of the Americans who strive to uphold the duties and responsibilities of citi-
zenship, the Congress, by joint resolution of February 29, 1952 (36 U.S.C.
106), designated September 17 as “Constitution Day and Citizenship Day,”
and by joint resolution of August 2, 1956 (36 U.S.C. 108), requested that the
President proclaim the week beginning September 17 and ending September
23 of each year as “Constitution Week.”
The Constitution is the supreme law and landmark legal document of the United States of America. It estab-
lishes the three branches of the federal government and specifies the powers and duties of each branch.
The United States Constitution is the oldest written constitution still in use and was framed by a convention
of delegates from twelve of the thirteen original states in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in May 1787 (Rhode
Island failed to send a delegate.) The Constitution was adopted on September 17, 1787 by the Constitution-
al Convention in Philadelphia. In 1791, a list of rights was added to the Constitution; the first ten amend-
ments became known as the Bill of Rights.
Mayor William Manuel has proclaimed September 17 as Constitution Day and Citizenship Day and the week
of September 17-23 as Constitution Week in the Village of North Palm Beach.
The Constitution of the United States is available for viewing on the National Archives website, http://
www.archives.gov/ (link: http://www.archives.gov/exhibits/charters/constitution.html)

Chess
Chess is both an art and a science
and with practice and patience, it
can be a life-long skill. It has been
called the sport of royalty, but it
can be enjoyed and learned by everyone at any age.
The proven benefits of chess are many for both chil-
dren and adults. In schools where chess is a part of
the curriculum, there has been a marked improve-
ment in grades and concentration. Chess is a mental
sport that improves the ability to concentrate, reason,
analyze and plan effectively. It teaches social skills of
cooperation, accepting defeat, and winning gracious-
ly! It is a hobby that can be played one’s entire life.
The mental aspect of chess is a great complement to
athletes looking for a competitive edge! Level 1
class meets Mondays 4:30-5:30 for 6 weeks, start-
ing Sept. 24. Fee:$65/60(RDF). Level I is for begin-
ner chess players. Level 2 is for those who have
mastered the basics, but want to learn tactics and
strategies. This 6-week class begins Sept. 24 from
6:00-7:00 pm. Fee:$65/60(RDF).
Clutter Busting book Study
Join a community of people who understand the
difficulty in "letting go" of coveted possessions
as they participate in book study on the book,
"Clutter Busting - Letting Go of What's Holding
You Back," by Brooks Palmer. The book is load-
ed with anecdotes and practical tips and is based
on the premise that your things are not sacred,
but you are! We will explore fundamental topics
as the false identities we assume through clutter,
the fear of change those junk piles represent, the
addictive nature of holding on to objects. Kathy
Andio, a former clutterer, will facilitate the group
and provide a safe place to discuss the reasons
for clutter, guide you out of the helpless feeling of
not knowing where to begin. Email Kathy at or-
ganizer@letcluttergo.net, or call her at 561-236-
4298. This is a walk-in class and the fee is
$12/10(RDF)/wk.
Instructors: Ken Bachman and Patty Antolik.

like the ball to start with your
shoulders, hips, knees and feet
parallel to this line. (Your feet
can be slightly open to the tar-
get line if you prefer).
2. Ball Position – Play the ball
just back of center with this
shot which will encourage a
downward strike and solid con-
tact.
3. Swing length – Make sure
to match the backswing and
through swing lengths on this
shot.
4.
Finish – On the through swing
it is paramount that you pivot
through to your finish instead of
trying to flick the ball with your
wrists. At your finish your belt
buckle and the club should be
pointed at the target.
Follow these pitching funda-
mentals and I know you will
start pitching the ball better.
Good luck!

Golf - Pitching Fundamentals— Lee Stroever, Director of Golf
Raise your hand if this has hap-
pened to you. You just hit two
beautiful shots on a long par 4
and find yourself just a few steps
off the green. You’re so close you
could toss the ball next to the pin
(let me remind you that the hand
wedge is still not a legal shot).
You grab your most lofted wedge
and go through your pre-shot rou-
tine. You address the golf ball and
make a swing. Fast forward 60
seconds and you just tapped in for
a six because you either sculled
your pitch across the green or you
hit it heavy and left it short of the
green. If you raised your hand, try
following the pitching fundamen-
tals below and I know you will see
improvement.
1. Alignment – Have the clubface
